<lj:music>Himekami - Exceeding Love</lj:music>

..I can't think of a clever title at the moment.

I'm a bit late writing up this report, I have no excuse. I don't try to be a web recluse, it just happens.

AWA was a fantastic con, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a "local" con, so we enjoyed a three hour drive instead of the thirteen hour hell it takes us to get to the cons in the notheast. Also, this con is held inside one hotel which is connected to a small convention center, so we didn't have to leave the building, just grab the stuff in the hotel room, ride the elevator down and set up. Much less stress for the most part.

Now, I talk about the Artist Alley....Which was the best alley I have been in since I started doing the con curcuit. The location was in a large open court in the center of all the event rooms, so people walked through it at all hours, instead of being shoved off in a closed room underground. The tables were quite large, at least a foot deeper than every other AA table I've been at, and the layout was easy to move through and find people. But the thing that really made this AA shine was it's staff. They operated efficiently and were extremely polite and helpful. They provided a free dinner for each table on Saturday so you wouldn't have to leave the alley at a peak time, delivered it right to your table and took extra orders for a very reasonable price for those with multiple people to feed, we didn't have to leave our table at all to order or pick up the food, they even came around to collect trash! Beyond this, if you needed help, they gave it. My tablemate, Kyle Ladd ran out of one of her prints and the Alley staff arranged for a ride for her to Kinkos and back to run off some more prints, no charge! I would suggest the AWA AA to any artist.

I also got to see several people I don't usualy get to see, including some of my friends from the northwest, my old roomie, HAC studios, and even freaking Hawk and Ananth, talk about left field there guys. It was awesome seeing everyone, sorry certain things had to happen to some folks and screw up the weekend. Don't think less of Atlanta! Wanna see you next year!

And to everyone who picked up a business card, bought a print, bought a commission, or just comented on some art, THANK YOU! You all really made my con complete, I love you guys. And for all my commissioners, if you scan those pieces, e-mail me a link! I'd really love to see them again and I hope they bring you smiles.

Also a big thanks to my fiancee. I could not have done this con year without you. You're my saint.

Peace out mates, Weekly updates forthcoming!

-JOY

(crossposted from my site at www.joymason.net because I'm lazy)

So! We'll ignore the fact I haven't posted since last month.

I'm going to Dragin*Con! This is the first con I've gone to in years where I'm not going to be focused on working. Much fun, hiujinks, liquor and Jay&Joy quality time will be had. I'm very much looking forward to some of their guests too (Ron Glass! Adam Baldwin! The Phelps brothers!), and their cosplay panels look fantasticly informative.

Speaking of cosplay, I will (hopefully) be re-intering the world of cosplay at this con. Jay and a few of his friends came up with the idea to do a group of Vault Dwellers from the game series Fallout, and they invited me to take part as well. I have my jumpsuit (needs some major taking in at the seams, it's big on me), some boots I can use and (hopefully) almost all the supplies I'll need to turn it into a vault 13 suit. I still need to get some blue and yellow thread, a big damned bottle of yellow fabric paint and a few micellany things, but not much really.

I'm going in the diretion of "Exiled wastes dweller" for this, so my suit will be ripped and distressed, and I'll be practicing lots of cool SFX makeup techniques on my face, neck and arms. I plan to have an assortment of sunburns, scuffs, scratches, gashes, and (best of all) festering radiation burns. In preparation, I broke out my old Ben Nye makeup kit and did a test blister on my arm this morning, and I think it turned out very well for a first-time-in-five-years attempt:

Full view shot:

Details of the two styles of blisters:

And all the stuff I used to make it:

Supply List:
Ben Nye Fair Olive creme foundation
BN creme contour pallette: olive fair/medium
BN Fair translucent powder
BN med brown eye pencil
Toilet paper
Liquid Latex

I think I could do with some greens or yellows and a good brick red pencil to add more definition, but for what I had to work with, I'm very proud.

Feel free to give your critique on it, or some suggestions on how to do it better (like how to make a crusty dried pus scab).

So...yeah...

I got distracted this weekend.

We conserve energy in zee family home, so no AC yet. And because our big double windows in our room face afternoon sun, it's really hot in the room from about 2pm til 6pm. I don't paint well when I'm all hot and funky. So, didn't get as much done on the death note pieces as I would have liked. I did however, get the scrollwork template done. I freehanded it all on one side, then traced it, flipped the paper over and rubbed the graphite off to mirror it. I never want to freehand scroll work again, so I'l be using this pattern on all three pieces.

Unfinished L peice

As far as fabric goes...I got some!! I ordered a scrap bundle from Kyoto Kimono and got an interesting mix. Some pieces I think will be absolutely perfect for what I need. One of the pieces, an uncut length of red fabric, is freaking GORGEOUS. At first I thought I'd use it in the scrolls, but I think instead I wanna keep it and make it into a wallhanging for myself.

This is what I'm going to be constructing, I'll be posting pictures of the process. I'm FAIRLY certain I know how to do it now:

I still need to get Rice Starch glue, unbleached Unryu and some dowels, oh..and y'no...do the paintings..... Trivial things...

I also got my materials for my moogles, so I can start on them. I plan on doing them when it's too hot, I need a break from painting or I'm in the car. So so much to do! I gotta stop being lazy....

So, another week of work almost done. Almost time for the weekend and a heckuva lot of painting. Gotta finish those Death Note pieces this weekend and work on a commissioned painting and a commissioned fanart. If I can just stay focused and not get distracted I'll be fine. So much to doooooo...

Otakon finaces are kicking my ass, the registration and table is paid for, but still have to save enough for hotel, gas, food, parking, water taxi passes and art show insertion fees (which I really hope Otakon posts soon). Plus I need to have cash on hand to pay for supplies for handicrafts, materials for the table and framing costs. So much money! And I'm only able to work my day job two days a week from now til I get a ne job, so I gotta bust my butt to do more commissions and go through all my crap to see if I have anything I can sell off. Blah!

So..I decided this year to forego any kind of birthday present from anyone. Otakon is what I want, nay, Need to do to get my convention circuit funding rolling. I'm gonna be asking that anyone who wanted to get me anything just drop a little change in the Otakon jar. Birthday's on the 24th of this month, so it'll be an alright time to have funds coming in. I hate bein' poor!

On a happier note, the death note peices are already looking awesome, I may fall in love with Gouache. So velvety. I have a good grasp of how to assemble the Kakejiku and have located both the Unryu paper and starch paste I will need. Now I just gotta find some damned fabric! argh. Not giving up, there's allways eBay, if I gotta buy stained old obis and chop them up, I will!

Oh! and I have a commission up for grabs on eBay too, here it is:
Commission on sale!!

That's it for me, time to go check prices on supplies.

Woooooot

Got my e-mail confirmation this morning that I made it into Otakon's Artist Alley, and thaaaaank god (or your corporate-appointed deity). I was so worried I wouldn't get a table, cinsidering with the change in command this year, information on the alley only just recently being announced, and a little scare about the tables selling out early (hooray for database flub-bubs). BUT I GOT ONE BITCHES. Just gotta mail this registration info and my monies to them.

It would have sucked if I didn't get this table, since I only go to Otakon to sell and push my name now. Really...Otakon just doesn't interest me all that much. I've yet to be impressed with the guests lately, only about 5% of the programming interests me (Katie's workshop was aaawesome, but I don't think that's happening this year..sadness). And it's not even like I can use it as a hangout con, since pretty much all of my friends do the same thing I do, so they'll be tied to their AA tables (or dealers room table..sly devils), even if they weren't, it's impossible to move around that con anymore, so crowded!

I reaally wish you could get an AA table sooner, because if I hadn't made the cap, I'd be out the money for registration, hotel and travel for nothing. It's really not fair (especially since you have to get a hotel within the month after last years con). They need like....registration for next year on sunday afternoon or something, so you're not up shit creek without a paddle if you miss the registration week. Not that this would ever happen, it'd probably be a nightmare for the administration. But still!

----------------------------

On the art front, I just bought the gouache for the Death Note painting set I have planned to sell at Otakon. Oh...My...God. I got ten 20mL tubes of acryla gouache...and even with my employee discount it was almost sixty dollars, the Illsutation board I'm using is ten dollars a sheet (22"x30"). God Art supplies are expensive...I dread when I break down and buy a set of Copics.

So, before con I have this art to do:

Death note portrait set, "good" side:
                L
                Mello
                Near
Okami Kakejiku (watercolor on rice paper mounted to a hanging scroll) set, Light and Dark
Kirin digital painting
Jenova digital painting

Plus I want to make a few moogles, try another new handicraft (surprise) and maybe make something for cosplay to sell.

Oh yeah! I gotta look for a job through all this too! fuuuun. And I'm still doing eBay commissions. I out of damned MIND.

Oh well, time for me to start working, have two large paintings to box up and ship today at work. Least I've only gotta work til noon and then I can go home to try and put a dent in this workload.

So, haven't posted here in ages. Seems normal, yes?

Well, here I am, on a whim typing, in the throes of trying to figure out how to make the anatomy work on this commission. Let's see..I had something to say...

Oh..yeah...

I'M ENGAGED BITCHES!

Jay proposed to me on the 21st, I now have myself the fiancee I've been wanting for quite a while now (ie. Jaybird. I am very happy. He even got me the exact stone I always wanted on my engagement ring, a big, beautiful Alexandrite, it's fantastic, already seen magenta, violet, marine green, hunter green and deep teal blue in it.

And now..for mushy date details...

Jaybird and I went down to Jacksonville the weekend of the 21st, and while there decided to go to the Jax Zoo, since, even though I'm a native to Jax, I'd haven't been since their renovations years ago. The weather was fan-tastic, sky was blue, sun was bright, a soft breeze, and the temperatures never went above 80. We strolled, holding hands, calling eachother over to see neat animals, talking more than I think we've talked in a long time. I geeked out over Vultures, he geeked out over owls, we got to see the leopards and jaguars up close, it seems whenever we'd pass spotted cats, they were pacing the enclosure like three feet in front of us, it was amazing. A Jaguar and the lopard both locked eyes with me several times, what an amazing feeling! We spent a lot of time in the aviaries, having south american and african birds buzz by our heads, we laughed at the funny little cuckoo birds, especially the ballsy one who was missing a foot. We saw otters and active (holy crap) vampire bats, petted pygmy goats, ate shaved ice, marveled at a lot of the native Florida animals like bald eagles, panthers and red wolves. It was -Amazing-.

After we got back to my Mother's place, while we were resting in my sister's room, Jay just looked at me with those wonderful eyes of his and gave me a look that is mine and mine alone, and asked me to marry him.

He even asked my mother for permission.

I am so totally in love.

So, me, Jaybird and his Mom went out to check out one of his colleges this weekend. First time I've gone to Baltimore when there isn't a con going. It's an okay town, seems fairly easy to get around, but damn, it was windy and a bit chilly, and everything intown closes way early.

We were there to check out the Baltimore International College, I was fairly impressed. The school is very small, maybe five hundred students right now, but they have some pretty good professors it seems, and very well equiped cooking labs. Got to eat lots of free food and watch some demos, all in all a fun college tour.

After the tour we went to the Walters Art Museum, which was more historical than art if you ask me. They had some impressive Japanese, Indian, Egyptian and Chinese collections, which all interest me immensely. And of course they had several mummies, one adult, two or three children, a handful of falcons and a cat. Oh, and their mounted insects were great too, though this one kid kept trying to light them on fire with the magnifying glass, he's gonna go places! ;¬_¬

That was about it for Baltimore, ate at a new grill, if you ever eat at Milton's, be warned, 'MEGA SWEET POTATO' = yam abomination, that thing had to weigh two pounds. The steak was excellent, and they had some very tasty crab and cheese bites. Wandered around for ages to try and find a coffee shop open at 5pm that wasn't a sit down 25$ a plate restaraunt in disguise. Didn't see as many bums as usual, either, which was good. Was unable to meet up ith Ananth which was unfortnate.

The ride there was HELL, mostly because of steady rain and getting cauht in bumper to bumper traffic around the DC beltway for like four hours. I hate the beltway...so...SO much. We were all ready to kill eachother. The ride back was pleasant, full of nice, colorful fall foliage, played lots of Harvest Moon and Cooking Mama on the DS, all turned out okay.

I'd say it was worth missing the House marathon.

Gah! I am so stagnant!!

I feel in a rut, maybe it's because I'm sick, but I really feel like I'm getting NUH-SING done. Haven't done much good art lately, hampered too hard by my damned work machine still being down. GAH! So enraged. Don't even have my personal art site up because the wireless netwrk keeps dropping connections to ftps. I have this great painting like..5% done......some comic character stuff, but nothing to sing about....I feel pretty useless artistically ...

And I'm still in a job I'm exausted of..I can't find my damned resume file so I can update it and start looking for something that isn't soul-draining retail.
Guuuuh...Sick...everyone is sick right now.

I dunno what I have, either a sinus breakdown or a cold. Whatever it is, Jay doesn't have it. Two days of a nasal fountain, scratchy throat, headache, neck ache and general grumpiness. My throat is still off, but mostly my sinuses just seem kinda worn out now, so I think the major part of the illness is done.

So, later this month Jaybird and I will be heading up to Baltimore to check out colleges. Jaybird has his eye on the culinary institute and I'll be checking out vet tech programs. I'm not giving up art by any strech, but I'll at least make decent money as a vet tech and I'll enjoy doing it. It'll be something to pay the bills while I pursue my pseudo-concept art career.

Hmm...time to wander off.

Beauregard the like, 17 year old cat with a wacked out thyroid is easier to take care of than I thought, though he's wise to the practice of putting the pills in a piece of cheese or meat, he can't detect them if you dissolve them in canned tuna with the juice.

Oh great....jay got a speeding ticket....God...fucking...damnit...

I am fucking tired of being broke!!
The babies are growing up too fast...

For those not in the know, Jay and I are fostering two babie kitties who would have been condemmed to the tick and flea infested statesboro woodlands. Their personalities are really starting to blossom. Siegfried is a very tough little boy, he likes to charge around and beat up his brother (who is smaller) whenever he can. He also loves to be near people and will shadow you wherever you go. He's a great big chicken in reality though, he's still pretty scared of being picked up, and unless you do it juuuust right, he screams at you...he also doesn't bathe well anymore. Zot is more flighty, kinda head in the clouds little boy. He's not grounded enough to have any fear, and also walks around like he's the boss, at least until Siggy springs from the shadows and bowls him over. He's the first to get in your lap and is very happy with being picked up, he'll even let you hold him on his back like a baby. He does fine with baths, just looks wet and a little perturbed, but doesn't try to leap up and claw your face like Siggy.

The bleach necklaces are coming along nicey, just wish I could find the charger for the good camera so I could take a good picture....Until then, here's one taken with our little keychain spy camera...

Really like how they're turning out...Gonna make the white ones in several versions, if you watch/read bleach you'll know, gonna go up to four marks. Hope to have a good number of these babies baked, painted and strung by otakon.

That's it for now!!!

    <lj:music>Maaya Sakamoto - Strobo no Sora</lj:music>

So yeah..

Spent the weekend (or at least the better part of it) visiting my mom back home for her birthday. Fun was had, beers and food was had, got to see my family for the first time in six months. Got to see my sis, Tiffany's new apartment and play with her animals, give two ferrets a bath and torment her cat. One of her ferrets latched onto the toe of my sock and dangled from it. We played guitar hero and I sucked at it. Got to spend lots of time catching up with mom and see my sister Brenda, who just got out of prison, Yeah, I'm so bloody proud, not really my highlight. Orange Park is building up a lot since I left, especially the rich yuppies out in fleming island, five years ago it was just trees, pasture land and the dump. Now it's full of gated communities, new subdivisions with expensive houses and about two square feet of yard, super wal-marts and starbucks. I am not impressed. And rosevelt blvd/highway 17 has like, three hundred decorative ponds/lakes with damed fountains. Way to waste electricity folks. Rita's italian ices shut down on san jose, I wanted some damned strawberry water ice with custard in the bottom god damnit. Turned on the radio to my old favorite station to find it was now some oldies country station, turns out that planet radion switched frequencies and took on lex and terry, who I think are real asshats. Least Robert Goodman still does forbdden planet on the weekends with new and indie music.

Currently have a kitten war in my lap. Jay and I are fostering two kittens, Zot and Siegfried. They're bloody cute, two little boy himalayan mixes, blue eyes, khaki and white with dark brown ears, tails and marks on their noses and toes. Both of them are 100% boy, troublemakers, spazzes, bullheaded..though Siggy is terrified of being picked up.

Otakon is still being a pain to plan for...and because of PortconMaine and Conneticon, Dave is gonna be very tricky to coordinate with..so I may ahve to fly solo on planning for the next week...blaaaah. Thirty-one people to plan for on various levels, plus my own stuff..speaking of which....

Coloring the Queen Mother image to be a new print for otakon, need to get it done soonish so I can get it to print. Gonna resupply all of my older prints too, chojimari, neji, michael, bronze, firefly, black dove, nanashi, hikaru...I think that's it... And I've gone crazy as I've decided I'm going to try for two Otakon premieres..Want to get an idea I've been kicking about out on paper, which follows in the footsteps of chojimari...

Eyeshield Damacy! I'm sketching out the thumbnail now and I like it so far. Hiruma makes a great king, and Kurita of course is adoreable as the katamari. The hah-hah brothers make an appearance as well..why? because I'm gay for Jumonji...AND I'M NOT EVEN A GUY.

That is all, continue what you were doing.

...maybe later I'll post some of my uber dorky bleach art.

    <lj:music>I wish I was the Moon - Neko Case</lj:music>

Curse you happymrlocust, I'll have to update my shields to your bizzare meme lazers.

Anywas, Six weird things you may or may not know 'bot lil ol' me.

1: I was born with a defect in my tear ducts, and such I was allways 'crying' as a baby. I would shed copius amounts of tears until I dehydrated, then I'd have to get fake tears and get re-hydrated, and it all started again. When I was six months old I had surgery to fix it, but every now and then they still leak a bit.

2: I spent a good part of my childhood on a poultry farm owned by my gramma. We had a tin roof and everything. Roosters are terrifying and I'll still run from one.

3: Another defect of mine is a deformed ribcage, they bow in instead of out. Apparently at any moment they could collapse and puncture my organs!! yay! The alternative is being in the hospital six months with a crank in my chest reforming them. Yay morphine!

4: I am absolutely, POSITIVELY terrified of...balloons...yes..get those giggles out. Mylar ballons are fine, but rubber baloons make me shake violently and flee. My brother used to pop them in my face.

5: I am allergic to capsicum, which is the chemical that make peppers and chillis spicy, so I can't have anything with them in it without violent stomache cramps and a fever. Yeah..no mexican or thai for me.

6: My career choice before artist was vetrinary surgeon. I love animals and I have a medical brain. Most of my life I've done vollunteer animal welfare stuff. You kick a dog around me I'll slit your throat.

I taaaag..hmm.. apothyww chayyot amuckfiddy ananthymous xerj naminess
